Donna Summer: A Celebration of Her Music

May 18, 2012 By Lux Girl Leave a Comment

Donna Summer: A Celebration of Her Music By Henry Branham Nothing can prepare you for someone’s death, be it a friend, a family member, or even a beloved celebrity.  These celebrities are our heroes (and I’m talking about the real celebrities with true talent and not the reality TV clowns and auto-tuned pop blunders out there).  I hate when people say, “But you didn’t even know them”.  This may be a true statement,  but when a celebrity’s work is such a part of your life, you feel the pain.  And to all of us who grew up in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Donna Summer’s music is part of the soundtrack to our lives.  While we deal with the devastating loss of this truly … [Read More...]

These Are the Best Years of Your Life

May 17, 2012 By Lux Girl Leave a Comment

by: Kim Cass   Stop a second and ask yourself:   What were the best years of your life?  Your teens? Twenties? Thirties? Forties? Fifties and beyond? Should we look back and reflect on the places we came from, the experiences that shaped the people we are today? Who are the people that touched our lives and changed us forever? Are they still with you, or as their time in your life come and gone, like a whisper? "We are not growing older, but we are getting smarter, we are getting more successful, we are getting stronger, we are getting more experienced, we are getting more loving and we are learning to live our life to the fullest. Being 30, being 40 or being 50 is just … [Read More...]

Why we “Love Elaine!”

May 14, 2012 By Lux Girl 1 Comment

So just who is Christen from Love Elaine? When she couldn’t find unique, special gifts to match her style and taste at big-box stores, Christen decided to take matters into her own hands– literally. In 2009 Christen started Love Elaine, a handmade shop that features unique aprons, totes, baby quilts and gifts in bright, modern fabrics. Christen is a self proclaimed “modern Martha” and spends her free time sewing, reading, baking and obsessing over the perfect gift for every occasion. We stumbled across her gorgeous aprons in a hunt for custom aprons to accompany our Kitchen Diaries Cookbook coming this fall! How lucky are we, to have found her? So we decided to hit her up with our … [Read More...]

Making Momtastic Memories for Mother’s Day

May 12, 2012 By Lux Girl 2 Comments

Making Momtastic Memories for Mother’s Day by: Hanna Elizabeth In light of Mother’s Day, I’d like to list a few thoughtful and hopefully, fun things to do with your mom this Sunday: 1. Cook your mom a meal. Instead of taking her out to eat at an overcrowded restaurant, why not put the skills she taught you in the kitchen to work? Remember when she would always make you your favorite dish whenever you came home for a visit? Now it’s your turn to return the favor. If your time is limited, maybe bake her favorite desert instead! 2. Schedule some one on one time with your mom. Does your mom have a favorite past-time, like gardening or painting? Maybe she’d like to go to an … [Read More...]

TV’s Worst Moms!

May 10, 2012 By Lux Girl Leave a Comment

TV'S Worst Moms! by Fandemonium * 1. June Cleaver ("Leave It To Beaver")  – Yes, she is the picture of suburban perfection, but that is exactly the problem.  June is all about appearances.  She desperately wants Wally and Theodore (“The Beaver”) to present a flawlessly wholesome image to the community, which in turn is a reflection on her perfect parenting skills and good breeding.  Wally plays the part to the hilt, but let’s be honest – Beaver is the very definition of a “stupid kid”.  The poor lad is constantly in trouble for not being perfect and embarrassing his family (getting his head stuck in a gate at the park, getting stuck in cup of soup on a billboard, etc).  … [Read More...]

Happy Hour Help! 6 Tips to a Healthy Happy Hour

May 9, 2012 By Lux Girl 5 Comments

Happy Hour Help! 6 Tips to a Healthy Happy Hour by: Abigail J. Dougherty, RD, LD/N   Picture this:  You sit down to happy hour at your favorite restaurant and a friend to your right orders:  “To start, I’ll have the mixed veggies. To drink: a sparkling water with a splash of low sugar cranberry juice and a lime…”  Said no one at Happy Hour EVER!  Even if these items were on a happy hour menu, who would actually order them?  They would subject themselves to a disappointing happy hour and extensive reticule by colleagues and friends.  No question, it is difficult to eat healthfully at happy hour surrounded by friends ready to blow off steam from a stressful work week.  … [Read More...]

TV’s Best Moms

May 8, 2012 By Lux Girl Leave a Comment

TV's Best Moms by Fandemonium * As Mother’s Day approaches, let us take time out to pay tribute to the best TV mothers ever.  Let’s face it, these are the women our very own mother’s have to live up to.  1. Roseanne Connor (“Roseanne”) – She is the antithesis of all the perfect TV moms that came before her and no matter how loud and abrasive she appears, she really is the best TV mom out there.  Roseanne does not care what the neighbors or the school teachers think of her or her children.  She allows her kids to voice their own opinions and express their own personalities.   This often backfires on her.  Becky is a stuck up little spastic who quits school to run off … [Read More...]

Pear Preserves with Brie on French Bread

May 6, 2012 By Lux Girl Leave a Comment

This is easily one of the most simple, elegant and easy three-ingredient appetizers we have made. It gets devoured by all who taste it. The sweetness of the fruit preserves offsets the creaminess of the brie. We serve it with Dan’s Sangria recipe (have a peek in The Kitchen Diaries column, the recipe was recently added!)  Pear Preserves with Brie on French Bread   Ingredients:  Brie French Bread Pear Preserves   Heat small or large wheel of brie in 350°F oven for approximately 10 minutes or until soft.   We used Pillsbury French bread and baked it, slicing it warm, but any fresh French bread will do.  Spread brie on wedges of bread and add a … [Read More...]

Your May Horoscopes by: Bonnie Landego Stepping stones have been placed, think back to Fall 2011 or 2010. The Super Full Moon on Saturday is crucial to all matters of sex ( oops pardon moi ) & other people's money & values of others. Discard what no longer serves us. Empowerment & significant turnarounds are the universe's way of saying Bravo!  Each of us can fall over our own two feet or thrust forth with a will power we did not know existed.  Your designs for first few weeks of May, below.  Sigue adelante!   Think … [Read More...]

Sexy Gardening... By: Lisa Burns Bend, twist, push, grunt... squat, reach, pull, grunt... That is my work out, no not at the gym but in my garden. Although you may not feel sexy working out in the garden wearing old sweats and covered in dirt but try changing your gym workout to a garden workout and watch the results both physically and mentally. Not to mention all the tasty veggies and fruits your garden will yield for your new healthier diet. It is time to say goodbye to boring exercises and pick up a shovel. Did you know that researchers estimate that gardening burns on average 300 calories per hour and digging burns twice the calories per minute over biking and aerobic workouts … [Read More...]

April 30, 2012 By Lux Girl Leave a Comment
